Everybody has one. Most side with the protagonists of the story, almost the same amount opting for the ever-amazing Kakashi Hatake, but what of you? Boast pridefully about who is the best and why.

Pish-tosh.
Shikamaru or bust, even attempting to find someone better is just a 'troublesome' waste of time. I mean; lazy, brilliant, leader... it's like someone invented the perfect character and then just to one up themselves added in awesome shadow moves and a smoking flaw to try and even it back out.

Holy hell. Jin. You read my mind. Nara Shikamaru is by far the best character in the show. His mentality and personality are uniquely blended to create perhaps one the greatest support characters in all of anime history, and I truly mean that.

Although...

Hoshigaki Kisame is absouletely incredible himself. The fact that only 30% of his Chakra was able to hold off Maito Gai at nearly his best is amazingly impressive. Not to mention that he has the most chakra out of all of the members of Akatsuki. Could you just imagine what Kisame could potentially do at the height of his capabilities? That would be one scary fish...

While it is true that only 30% of his chakra was used to fend off Gai I would have to argue that had he been using a normal sword rather than the samehada, which has the distinctive ability to cut away chakra thus weakening an opponent with every slash, the match would have potentially been more equal. Not to say he isn't powerful, and pretty cool to boot, just find it a bit lame that so long as he wields such a blade we'll never see his true abilities as an individual.

In my personal opinion as a second I would have to choose Hinata Hyuga. Not only is her attitude totally cute but she's the type of person who's always trying to better herself by following in the footsteps of those she respects or cares about. Something just about everyone can relate to.

Ah, you're right about one thing. Hoshigaki Kisame does have the Samehada, "The sword that doesn't cut; it scrapes", and that alone does have a huge advantage, but only if used against someone with a lot of chakra. Maito Gai, on the other hand, has very little chakra, seeing as how he's a Taijutsu Master. So that weapon wouldn't deem very effective against him. And now, though Gai opened all 8 Chakra Gates, he also still had his leg weights on. We all remember how much quicker his pupil became when he took them off. Now imagine how much better Gai may be had he had the weights off. Pretty scary if you ask me. All in all, if both people went FULL out, though, I think Kisame would take the cake, but Gai would most definetely beat the hell out of him first.

Hmm... I do believe you are correct Zaraku. Though I must lightly mention the fact that Taijutsu as a whole is the ability to reinforce physical capabilities with chakra, meaning though Gai doesn't have that much he still needs it quite a bit...
Wow, just thinking of all the times we've been forced to suffer through a battle where neither combatant was at full capacity, thus limiting our perspective on their capabilities... It's fairly frustrating to say the least.
I must wonder though... If Itachi and Kisame are semi-even when seen as a whole, not just in one aspect... And Kakashi can fend himself against Itachi for a while, wouldn't it beg the question; shouldn't Kakashi's self proclaimed eternal rival Gai be at least a bit closer to Kisame's full capabilities? Then again maybe that would just be echoing the matter of what would happen if he dropped the weights... perplexing thoughts abound...
